A hallmark of an independent school is the freedom to determine a unique point of view. At Sonoma Country Day School, our point of view defines who we are and distinguishes us from other schools and educational institutions. Our first brochure promised that our school would "change your dinner table conversation" - and we have been doing just that for over 28 years. Whether changing a family conversation, changing opportunities, or changing a path in life, a SCDS education enables young people to change possibility into reality and to do so responsibly, with integrity and respect.
Meaningful relationships between students and teachers are the heart of our educational approach. Exceptional teachers, with extensive training in and deep passion for their subject areas, balance high expectations for student learning with caring for their students' social and emotional well being. We pledge to know each child and to value his or her unique strengths and contributions to our community. As you enter the school via the Sun Court you encounter the inscription: Our search is for those moments and situations when we are most alive. Our teachers nurture joy in discovery, awakening each child's intellectual curiosity and love of learning.
SCDS curricula offer both breadth and depth. Students pursue excellence across a broad range of endeavors in core academics, visual and performing arts, physical and outdoor-environmental education, presentation and performance, service, leadership, technology, and development as young people of character. Our students delve deeply into their pursuits, creating opportunities for advanced study and challenge at all levels.
SCDS develops what the 21st century demands - agile, broadly prepared young people who are creative and global-minded. Our students will be ready for leadership and service, and adept at problem-solving, collaborating, and communicating. But these skills are meaningless without the moral compass to wield them with integrity. SCDS teachers cultivate an ethic of caring, respect, and responsibility in their classrooms, galleries, studios, hallways, sports fields, and gardens.
Our point of view also describes the nature of the relationship we develop with our families. Throughout the admission process, it is said that we do not just accept a student; we enroll a family. Our diverse community is bound by a shared mission, passion for education, and aspirations for children's learning. The partnership we build with families allows all children in our community to flourish.
At SCDS, we provide children with an education that will be treasured for their lifetime
