What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional Kindergarten, known as TK, is a bridge between preschool and kindergarten that gives children the gift of time as they enter their foundational elementary school years. Students are introduced to academics through developmentally appropriate themed centers and play-based learning and develop their social and creative natures in a small class with caring and thoughtful faculty.

  • Is there an age requirement for TK?

Not at SCDS. In public schools in California, TK has specific birthdate requirements, but at SCDS, we know that chronology is only one of many ways to measure physical, cognitive, and social development. Most of our students in TK are between 4 and 5 years of age.

While our students practice mindfulness and benefit from some quiet time during their day, the SCDS TK classroom does not offer naptime, and we ask that TK students be comfortable attending to their restroom needs independently (not that we expect perfection here by any means!).

  • What does a TK day look like?

The SCDS TK program is a full day (8:10am-3:05pm) and students have access to our extensive extended program services as well (open until 5:30pm daily).

TK students receive instruction in literacy, mathematics, and social studies in their homeroom class and also enjoy specialist classes, including science in our outdoor laboratory, music, art, movement, social and emotional learning, library, and Spanish.

Our TK class participates in all-school Assemblies and presents on stage throughout the year, building their public speaking skills and developing the confidence SCDS students are so well known for!

  • How is TK different from preschool?

TK generally offers more structure and academic instruction than a preschool setting. TK helps children develop the fundamental skills they will need to succeed in their futures, academically, behaviorally, socially, and creatively. TK students also interact with the rest of our K-8 students rather than being the eldest children in their school - having older buddies and role models is an exciting part of TK!
