Happy Birthday to the Statue of Liberty

"She has come to stand for the common hope of the old world and the new...the peace of mankind – all people living together in justice, mutual respect, and prosperity. This hope has come closest to being realized in America...by free men from many nations." ~President Dwight D. Eisenhower,1956

President Eisenhower was speaking about the Statue of Liberty, which turns 124 years old on October 28. Truly an international and collaborative effort, the statue was created by the minds and hands of such people as Edouard de Laboulaye, Frederic Bartholdi, Gustave Eiffel, Joseph Pulitzer and Gustave Borghlum.

This week Dr. Weaver encourages students to explore the history of the Statue of Liberty and to share any interesting facts with him. Students may be intrigued by what is written on the tablet that Lady Liberty holds. Websites recommended by Dr. Weaver are listed below.
