The Imagination Club

“We think of ideas. We work together. We work hard.
We keep trying and do not give up!”
- SCDS First Grade Students

Can children make a difference in the world? Can Sonoma Country Day School help develop the creative genius in students? Can adults learn from the creative ideas of children? The answer to all of those questions is a resounding, “YES!”

In the summer of 2012, a nine-year-old boy from Los Angeles built an elaborate cardboard arcade that turned the world upside down. The documentary of his story, “Caine’s Arcade,” inspired millions and led to the development of the global Imagination Foundation whose mission is to find, foster, and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in children around the world, and to raise a new generation of innovators and problem solvers.

In 2014, Sonoma Country Day School was selected as one of thirty sites worldwide to participate in the Foundation’s Imagination Chapter Pilot Program. One exciting component of the program is the annual Global Cardboard Challenge (GCC). The goals of both the Imagination Foundation and the Global Cardboard Challenge are to foster creativity, entrepreneurship, and critical 21st century skills in children through “Creative Play.”

With the enthusiasm of twenty-five incredible first graders, the “Imagination Club” was launched at SCDS in the fall of 2014. The club meets weekly during school hours and is facilitated by Molly Hill and Melissa Kang (first grade teachers) and Patti Wick (Director of Innovation in Learning.) In a matter of months, these first graders, through creative play and design and build challenges, have shown growth in skills that will prepare them for their future education, careers, and contributions to society: perseverance, risk-taking, problem-solving, collaborating, communicating, reflection, and creative thinking.
