The SCDS Fund: Say Yes to Possibility

Each fall, Sonoma Country Day School launches its annual giving campaign—The SCDS Fund—the cornerstone of our philanthropic support and the first gift we ask of every member of our community. Tuition covers only a portion of the cost to educate each student, and we rely on annual gifts to bridge the gap and elevate every aspect of the SCDS experience.

Unrestricted gifts to The SCDS Fund go to work immediately, allowing school leadership and the Board of Trustees to confidently invest in the areas of greatest need and opportunity. Your support helps us say “yes” to bold ideas and transformative programs that:
  • Support a robust academic program for all learners
  • Foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving
  • Strengthen arts, athletics, and enrichment
  • Invest in experiential learning and sustainability
  • Attract and retain exceptional educators
  • Provide access to cutting-edge technology and customized teaching
  • Prepare for unforeseen needs and unique opportunities

Every gift—whether $25 or $50,000—is meaningful, appreciated, and tax-deductible. We encourage all families to participate in a way that feels personally significant and accessible. Your generosity fuels our mission and ensures that SCDS remains a place where students are challenged, inspired, and prepared to lead with purpose.

Thank you for investing in our students, our faculty, and the future of SCDS.

List of 8 frequently asked questions.

  • Q Why do we need The SCDS Fund?

Sonoma Country Day receives no funding from local, state or federal governments. To support its operating budget, SCDS relies on tuition, fees, and charitable gifts. For parents, making a tax-deductible contribution to The SCDS Fund is better than having non-deductible tuition raised even higher. Tuition alone does not allow for the continued growth and well-being of the school. While tuition pays a majority of the costs to educate a child at Sonoma Country Day, SCDS Fund dollars help fund projects and programs that keep SCDS in the academic forefront of independent schools. In a sense, the Annual Giving Program provides the “hidden scholarship” that all students receive to broaden their education. This “scholarship” is approximately $5,614 per student, and is the difference between the amount of tuition paid and the cost to educate each child for the current year.
  • Q How are gifts to The SCDS Fund used?

Unrestricted gifts support every corner of SCDS life. From classroom instruction and supplies and faculty salaries to the arts, athletics, academics, and more, your gift provides our Head of School the flexibility to apply the funds where they will have the greatest impact.
  • Q How much should I give?

The best gift is one that brings you joy and reflects your commitment to the school and its values. Determining how much that is will be different for every family and depends on several factors, including your financial situation, the school’s needs, and what you feel comfortable contributing. Our annual budget counts on $551,250 from The SCDS Fund and gifts range from $5 to $50,000.
  • Q Why do you host The SCDS Fund pledge drive for parents in October?

Knowing how much to expect in charitable contributions early in the school year provides our school leadership with the resources to maintain our distinctive educational experience throughout the year. We also hope consolidating our request of parents to one month is more respectful than having requests linger for many months.
  • Q Do I have to give in October?

It is helpful to know what your family's charitable intentions are for the school year, so we ask that you please consider pledging your support now and then make your gift at a time that works best for your family. Pledges may be paid monthly or any time before June 15. For some families, a tax write-off in 2025 is better, and for others, 2026 is better. Some parents can also take advantage of matching gifts from their companies, which aren’t always available in October. While we gratefully accept gifts all year long, pledging your support in October is very helpful from a financial planning perspective.
  • Q Can I designate my gift for a specific purpose?

Yes, you may request that your gift be earmarked for a specific purpose that’s meaningful to you.  To explore a restricted gift, contact Elizabeth Gleadall, Director of Advancement (elizabeth@scds.org or 707-284-3220).
  • Q Does your company have a matching gift program?

It never hurts to ask! Some companies will consider one-time matches or may be inspired to start a program if enough employees express interest. Many companies already offer matching gift programs as part of their employee benefits. Or match volunteer hours worked by employees. Check with your HR department or search your company’s intranet.

Matching gifts help us stretch every dollar further, and is one of the easiest ways to amplify your generosity without spending more.
  • Q What is the Founders’ Circle?

The Founders’ Circle was established to recognize the extraordinary generosity and service of those individuals who have dedicated their time and resources to SCDS since it was established in 1983. Every year, donors of $3,000 and up to The SCDS Fund, along with donors of other major gifts, are invited to an annual acknowledgment cocktail party which takes place in February or March. In addition, volunteer leaders, such as trustees, CDP board members, and room parents are also included. All of these individuals stand out for building upon the founders’ inspiration and securing the presence of this premier educational institution in Sonoma County.
